LoveLula subscription box - October

Saturday, 5 November 2016

There's no better way to discover new products and brands for a good price, than a subscription box. And with the LoveLula subscription box you'll get to discover organic and cruelty-free products. It's a great way to be introduced to green beauty for only £12.50.

I recently received the October box and thought I would share with you what's inside.

It is a gentle cleansing treatment with Rosa Mosqueta oil, calendula extract, cocoa butter and Rosewater. Helps to remove impurities and make-up. Suitable for Vegans. I'm looking forward to trying this.

It soothes, softens and protects the lips. Perfect now when the weather turned colder. I cracked this open seconds after I opened the box and loving it already.

REN's latest product. It's a water-charging hydration booster designed to work in harmony with the skin, to prevent the ageing effects of dehydration.

RENs senaste produkt.

A handmade soap that's made with Shea butter and vitamin enriched olive- and coconut oils. It has a wonderful scent of Lavender and I can't stop smelling it.

It's a face and body oil. It's great for scars, stretch marks, wrinkles and dry skin. I can't wait to try this and hope that all my wrinkles will disappear.

That was LoveLula's October box. Worth over £40.
It's too late to get this box but make sure you order the next month's box here
It's also available outside the U.K. Which is great as I can get it to me in Sweden.

The 5 most important beauty products to swap to organic

Monday, 19 September 2016

We have just entered into soil association's organic beauty week. To swap over to organic can sometimes be overwhelming so I put together a list of the 5 products I think is the most important to swap first. Try and think of products you use most often or on biggest parts of your body and start with those.

Shower gel
A shower gel is something we use every day all over our bodies. It then gets flushed out through the drain and eventually reaches our waters. Choosing an organic shower gel helps not only the environment but also your skin. Staying away from harsh ingredients that dry out your skin will make your skin look and feel better. I choose Weleda shower gel.

Shampoo
Many people complain about itchy scalp and swapping to an organic shampoo normally helps. Many regular shampoos contain SLS that removes our natural oil which dries the scalp out. I choose John Masters Organics - zinc & sage

Jag väljer John masters organics - zinc and sage.

Toothpaste
When choosing a toothpaste I try and avoid ingredients like fluoride, triclosan and SLS. Using harsh chemicals that are bad for your health and cause irritation inside your mouth is a no-no for me. I choose Urtekram toothpaste

Deodorant
Many antiperspirants contain compounds like aluminium chloral hydrate, which makes a temporary plug within the sweat duct and makes you stop sweating. Research suggests that aluminium based compounds may be causing health problems.
Most deodorants simply work to fight bacteria and thereby prevent body odour and don't stop you sweating. When switching to a natural deodorant your glands and pores will begin to unclog and function properly. I choose C/O Gerd unisex deodorant

Face oil/cream
Choosing an organic facial oil or moisturiser will help to restore your skin's natural balance. The skin on your face is normally more sensitive than rest of your body so it makes sense to use a gentle product with as little harsh ingredients as possible that won't harm the environment, your health or your skin. I choose Mallow and white face oil.

Jag väljer Mallow and white face oil.

The Soil association is running a campaign all week which is called #lookforthelogo which simply means look for their logo when buying beauty products to know what you're getting.

What are you going to swap first? Or if you already have what did you think was the most important?

Also, check out my post on other things to swap this organic September

What are Parabens and should you avoid them

Saturday, 14 November 2015

We often hear Parabens are bad for us and we should choose Paraben free products. But why are they bad and why should we avoid them? Today I'm looking in to Parabens with a magnifying glass and hopefully make things a bit clearer.

What are Parabens?
Parabens are cheap and effective preservatives. Parabens are used to make products last longer. They kill mold and fungus for longer and that way dramatically extend the shelf life of many beauty and health care items and stops them going bad too quickly.

Why are Parabens bad?
Many studies have been done on the most common Paraben chemicals like

• methylparaben
• ethylparaben
• propylparaben
• butylparaben
• isobutylparaben

According to the studies parabens may be bad to your harm health. By contributing to the development of cancerous tumours. There are differing views on this subject from a range of medical researchers.  There is the question that these chemicals are found in some cancerous tumour tissue. The links between Parabens and cancer (specifically breast cancer) are of concern to people.

There is a worry that Parabens can be stored in the body and over time they could have a cumulative effect and damage health over time.

While there is currently no scientific evidence to confirm that Parabens directly causes cancer. It's right to be mindful. Do you want to take the risk? I know I don't.

Where do I find Parabens?
Parabens are found in over three-quarters of beauty and health care products. Almost any typical beauty or health care aide. May contain these chemicals, unless it's specifically labelled "Paraben-free".

Parabens are found in most haircare and skincare products like

• Shampoos & conditioners
• Moisturisers
• Sunscreens
• Toothpaste
• Mascara
And many other cosmetics.

Alternatives to Parabens
Paraben-free products may contain ingredients, such as organic-acids, that help to preserve formulas without harmful side effects. Examples of organic acids used in the place of Parabens include

• diazolidinyl urea
• sodium benzoate
• potassium sorbate

Always read the labels on products. But safest is always to go for products that are labelled Paraben-free.

If you want to play it extremely safe, use a few oil-based organic products that don't contain water (which calls for a preservative). They often come in dark containers with a pump so that light and air don't degrade them quickly. Just make sure you use them within their use-by date.

Conclusion
While the evidence is not completely satisfactory regarding the safety of Parabens in cosmetics. I think it's important to be aware and make choices of avoiding these toxins for your own health. Choose Paraben-free products.

My favourite Paraben free brands

Are you concerned about Parabens? Or do you believe it's nothing to be concerned about? What are your favourite Paraben-free products?

Benefits of using Argan oil

Saturday, 7 November 2015

Argan oil, also known as the golden oil from Morocco, is a great oil with many benefits for both hair and skin.

Argan oil is the purest form of the oil found in the Argan trees, that grows in the southwest region of Morocco. Argan oil is extracted from the Kernels. Because the tree is found only in a limited area, the oil in itself is quite rare and this is why Argan oil is more expensive than other oils. But because it's highly concentrated you only need couple of drops.

Argan oil is beneficial for both the hair and skin. Some of those benefits are

for hair
- tames frizzy hair
- prevents dry scalp
- promotes hair growth
- mends split ends
- adds shine
- protects agains heat
- softens hairs

for skin
- anti inflammatory
- improve elasticity
- reduce appearance of wrinkles, lines and blemishes.
- hydrates dry skin
- fade sunspots
- strengthen nails

Argan oil is a dry oil and not as greasy as coconut oil for example.
Some easy ways to use Argan oil are

Body Moisturiser
 - apply directly to your face and body or add couple of drops to your regular moisturiser for extra glow.

For Your hands
 - apply to your hands for a nail conditioner and cuticle moisturiser.

Hair treatment
- work a good amount into hair and leave it overnight to calm dry, frizzy and split hair. Wash it off in the morning.

Hair serum
- smooth a drop over hair after styling to tame flyaway or static hair.

Some of the key ingredients that Argan oil naturally contains are

Vitamin E
Which is great for
- treating and preventing acne
- anti-ageing
- anti-wrinkle
- reduces under eye circles.

Omega 6
That will help prevent hair breakage

Saponins
That will soften hair and skin.

Argan oil is such a great oil, but unfortunately there's a lot of fake ones out there. Many products labelled as Argan oil hair treatment. They are actually made almost of silicone (dimethicone) and its derivatives. Many containing less than 1% of Argan oil. These products are not adding the beneficial fatty acids and antioxidants of Argan oil. To make sure you got the real deal, this is what you should look out for.

- organic
- cold-pressed
- the ingredient should be Argania spinosa or Argan oil.

I use John Masters organic 100% Argan oil. It's harvested and produced in Morocco by hand in the Argan forest. It is cold pressed and extra virgin. The production is carried out by a women's cooperative, which has established an ecosystem reforestation project to ensure sustainability and to protect the rare endangered tree. The income generated is providing healthcare and education for the entire community.

Have you ever used Argan oil? What do you use it for?

My autumn hair products

Friday, 23 October 2015

We are moving in to the colder winter months and it can mean disaster on your hair. But it doesn't have to, as I mentioned in a previous post, on how to look after your hair in cold weather.

This post is more about my favourite hair products during the winter and how I personally looking after my hair.

In the winter we expose our hair to extreme colds and heat with cold weather, central heating and hot showers. Eventually it will make your hair dry. The key is moisture and more moisture.

Let me tell you what I use on my hair at the moment to make sure my hair will be happy all the way through winter.

O'right Recoffee shampoo

It's important to use a moisturising shampoo to not dry out your scalp.
O'right's Recoffee range is repairing and moisturising. Perfect for cold weather. It's made from old coffee grounds.

C/o Gerd deep moist conditioner
It can be good to swap to a more moisturising conditioner in the winter to keep your hair from drying out.
C/o Gerd, a Swedish brand from Lapland, keeps impressing me with their products. I was amazed with this conditioner. It's made from blueberries and makes my hair soft and shiny. It feels great for days after I washed my hair.

John Masters avocado & lavender intensive conditioner

This is one of my favourite hair products. It's so lovely and it makes my hair feel soft and healthy. I like to use John Masters conditioner when I feel my hair need an extra boost. The lavender and avocado makes it smell lovely and it gives you a luxurious spa feeling.

Argan oil
Argan oil also known as liquid gold origins from Morocco. It's great for your hair making it feel softer, silkier and shinier. Argan oil is great in it's pure form so try and find 100% Argan oil. Many brands trying to fool you that they sell you argan oil, but they mix it with so many other ingredients. You only need couple of drops on your ends and it's going to feel so much healthier.

C/o Gerd B2 hair serum

Again I'm a big fan of c/o Gerd. Their B2 hair serum is hydrating and takes away any frizz and keeps my hair soft. I think it's important to use a product in the winter that hydrates your hair to avoid any static hair and helps it from drying out.

Those are the hair products I'm using right now. What are you using at the moment? Do you change your hair routine depending on season?
