A green makeover of your hair

Sunday, 25 September 2016

I can't let organic beauty week pass without talking about hair. Many people often forget their hair when changing to organic. But what you put on your hair and scalp is just as important as anywhere else on your body. So here's what you can do to make your hair "green".

Shampoo and conditioner
If your shampoo contains parabens or harsh detergents like Sodium Lauryl Sulphate/ sodium laureth sulphate (SLS or SLES) you should change it right away. SLS dries out your hair and irritates your scalp. Check out my post on how to find a good shampoo. http://www.sarasteele.co.uk/2016/03/how-to-choose-good-shampoo.html?m=1

Avoid conditioner with silicones. Sure they make the hair feel all silky smooth but it doesn't do your hair any good. Look for ingredients that end with -icone and -oxane and avoid them. Instead, try and find an organic conditioner.

Styling products
There're so many great organic styling products these days. There's no need to use hairspray with aerosol and serums full of silicones.

Hairdresser
Going to the hairdresser and putting on lots of chemicals is not just bad for your hair but also your health as well as the hairdressers health.
Conventional hair salons use products that contain chemicals that are potentially dangerous for both the environment and human health. Organic salons decide to remove synthetic colours and only work with natural and organic products. In Scandinavia we have something called Grön Salong (English: “Green Salon”) and they certifies environmentally-friendly hair salons that use products free from such harmful substances.

Hair colour
Today we colour our hair more than ever. Most people don't even know what their natural colour is.
Synthetic hair colour can harm our health and cause serious allergic reactions and can contain hormone-disrupting substances suspected of damaging fertility and can be causing cancer. It's also common for hair loss. This is something you willingly expose yourself and your hairdresser of. So what should you do? Go to an organic hair salon that uses natural herb colours. It protects the hair more rather than damaging it.

5 easy changes you can do for organic September

Wednesday, 7 September 2016

You don't have to go completely organic for September. Doing too much at once can be too hard and normally won't make you stick to it.  However, there are a few easy ways you can make some small changes for Organic September this year. The next time you do your shopping,  consider the things you buy on a regular basis. Try and change them to organic alternatives.

Tea/coffee
Normal tea bags are usually bleached and the tea leaves aren't always washed before bagging which means you're putting pesticides and bleach in boiling hot water when you're having a cup of tea. Same goes for coffee beans that are washed in chemicals before they reach your morning coffee. Choosing organic tea or coffee will also help the growers avoid breathing in dangerous chemicals and pesticides.

Milk
Milk normally goes with the tea and coffee. Whether you drink milk or choose an alternative, next time try and swap to the organic one instead.
It will give healthier cows, happier farmers and a better environment.

Fruit and vegetables
They're are sprayed with lots of pesticides which are bad for you, animals and nature. You can easily swap out one or two products each time you shop. You'll be surprised that it won't cost you much more.

Beauty product
Try to swap just one product this month. My advice would be something you use a lot of or big parts of your body, like shower gel. Your skin will thank you as it won't dry out as quickly. It will also be kinder to the environment when it's going down the drain.

Hairdresser
Next time you need a haircut or your colour doing. Consider going to an organic hairdresser. The vast amount of dangerous chemicals that you expose yourself and your hairdresser for is not worth it. Imagine no harsh smells and healthier hair.

Monday, 5 September 2016

Last week Green Heads invited to a launch party of their salon and name change. Green Heads is an organic certified salon. I think it's great for us organic hairdressers to work together for an aim to reach out to more people. So I happily joined them.

There was champagne, green smoothies and delicious raw nibbles all from Rawlicious
They're having a workshop soon which I'm planning to attend as I would love to get into more raw cooking and especially baking.

We got to listen to Maria Hellström, who owns the salon, explaining the concept of green salon.
Conventional hair salons use products that contain chemicals that are potentially dangerous for both the environment and human health. Grön Salong (English: “Green Salon”) certifies environmentally-friendly hair salons that use products free from such harmful substances. There are more than 100 salons in Denmark, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland that have been certified.

I was delighted that Hannah Sjöström from Naturligt snygg with her gorgeous book with the same name was there. It's a great book especially for anyone who is a green beauty beginner. I purchased the book as I've been drooling over it on Instagram for months. I also got it signed and had an opportunity to speak to Hannah as well.

We got to hear from Hannah and also from rawlicious as well as from the brand wise.

It was a wonderful evening and Green heads salon looks amazing. The location is perfectly placed on a hill with a beautiful view, which gives it so much natural light in the salon.

Vilket ger mycket naturligt ljus.

I just want to wish Green heads good luck with all their work and it's great to see more organic salons.

Have you ever had your hair done in an organic salon?

How To: Braided Updo Hairstyle Tutorial | Sara Steele

Tuesday, 17 November 2015

Today I'm doing a braided updo hairstyle. It's perfect if you want to put your hair up for a party or any special occasion. It's easier than you think.

First clip away the front section of your hair. Depending on how much you want to the side. If you like it loose and messy you'll need more hair or if like me I mainly will have my fringe and just a small section of hair to the side. It's all personal preference.

Then do a section of the side of your hair and clip away rest of the hair for now.

With your side section make a Dutch plait adding more hair as you work yourself down the plait. For more detail of a Dutch plait watch my video here: http://youtu.be/nVPwdcHv8h0

To make the plait look bigger pull the sides of the plait from top to bottom.

Make three pony tails and back comb in small sections to add extra volume.

Take each small section and  roll  it around your finger and pin them up. Leave the ponytail nearest to the plait for now.

Now pin the plait to the back.

Then to pin up the last section to cover the end of the plait.

Lastly we are now pinning the front section to the side. Make sure you don't pin the hair over the braid. You can make the hair hanging loose or tight. It's up to you and how you like it.

Finish off with some hairspray man feel free to accessorise.

For this hairstyle I used

  • Bobby pins from hair tools
  • Pin tail comb from Lotus
  • Elastic bands from Sally's

I'm getting my hair done with natural colours

Sunday, 25 October 2015

Today I've decided to bring you to my salon where I work whilst I get my hair done.

I want to share a little bit more about what I do and also about our hair colours.

I work as a senior stylist in Natural colour works in Soho. Which is an organic salon using natural hair colours.

I have my highlights done by the amazing Jess.  Today she's  doing a full head of highlights on my hair and also a haircut. It's been too long since I had either done.

Jess working her magic
Colour
Earlier this year I had red hair and you can see that from my early blog days.
I've since then decided to go back blonde. But my hair got pretty damaged after going red. I kept colouring it every 2-3 weeks because it didn't want to stay in. So I didn't want to do a big job and change it all in one go. I decided to just add a few more blonde highlights each time. And we are more or less all there now. You can only see a little bit of red in my hair now.

Today I will have 3 different blondes in there to give it a nice, natural blonde colour.

My colours (from left watercolour, soya and seaweed)

The first colour I use is the seaweed lightener that works like bleach. But doesn't dry your hair out as much and more gentle. This is the blondest highlight.

I then have a soya based colour. A golden honey colour. It contain no ammonia or ppd.

Finally a few low lights with the water colour that's a medium blonde. Watercolour is our most gentle colour as it's not mixed with a peroxide or contain any ammonia. But you can't lighten the hair with it so perfect for low lights.

A good look or what do you think?

All together this will make a nice blonde colour that blends in well and looks natural. Most of the red will finally be gone.

Haircut

For my haircut I know I need to cut a good amount off. I also like the length at the moment. But healthy hair wins and I chop about 3 inches off because it needs it. Jess cut in a few layers as well do make it a more textured look.

It now feels nice and healthy and I do like the length as well.

Before and after
 And a selfie of course
What do you guys think? Have you done anything different to your hair lately?
